The Moscow City Court upheld the arrest of Alexei Smirnov, the former governor of the Kursk Region, in a case of embezzlement and left him in jail. This was announced on July 16 by a correspondent of Izvestia from the courtroom.

Smirnov attended the meeting via videoconference. Earlier, his lawyer asked to review the case and cancel the measure of restraint for his client.

The ex-governor was detained on April 16. Vladimir Lukin, the former general director of the Kursk Region Development Corporation, testified against him, having already been arrested in the case of embezzlement during the construction of fortifications. On the same day, the Meshchansky District Court of Moscow arrested the former head of the Kursk region for two months. Later, on June 6, his detention was extended until September 15.

According to Irina Volk, the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, law enforcement officers charged Smirnov and his deputy Alexei Dedov with embezzlement of more than 1 billion rubles.
