Car shipments from South Korea to Russia have almost doubled

In June 2025, cars worth the equivalent of $84.7 million were imported to Russia from South Korea. This is 1.8 times more than in the same month last year, RIA Novosti calculated based on data from the Korean statistical Service.

At the same time, compared with May, June purchases turned out to be 1.3% lower, a decrease recorded for the second month in a row. In just six months, Russia imported $417 million worth of passenger cars from South Korea, which is 1.4 times more than in the same period last year. Shipments for the whole of 2024 totaled $588.8 million.

In June, Russians spent the most money on cars with engines from 1.5 to 3 liters of gasoline ($63.8 million) and diesel ($15.7 million), as well as with gasoline engines up to 1.5 liters ($5.1 million).

During the year, Russia rose from 15th to 12th place in the structure of automobile exports from South Korea. The United States became the leader in car purchases from this republic in June by a wide margin ($2.7 billion), followed by Canada ($518.8 million), Great Britain ($268.3 million), Australia ($229.9 million) and Kyrgyzstan ($227.5 million).

The day before, it was reported that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia proposes to review the approaches to access to traffic of cars with a right-hand drive, taking into account the safety risks created by the operation of such vehicles. The ministry noted an increase in the import of right-hand drive vehicles to Russia and an increase in the main accident rates with their participation.
