WP learned about Trump's associate's call to release data on the Epstein case
Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson called for the release of data on the case of American financier Jeffrey Epstein, which indicates disagreements in the Republican Party. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on July 16.
"Johnson is a close ally of [US President Donald] Trump has never publicly disagreed with the president on any issue," the article says.
In an interview with podcast host Benny Johnson, the senator stated that he stands for transparency in the Epstein case.
"This is a very sensitive issue, but we need to publish everything and let people decide for themselves," he said.
Despite the fact that Johnson publicly called for the files to be made public, he opposed the procedural proposal put forward by the Democrats, which called for a vote in the House of Representatives for their release.
"Disagreements with the Trump administration on an issue close to the heart of the MAGA presidential base (Make America Great Again — "Let's restore America to its former greatness." - Ed.), indicate that the heated debate around Epstein is far from over," the publication clarifies.
As noted in the publication, many supporters of the president of the United States believed him that as soon as he returned to the White House, the administration would release files that, according to Trump, had been hidden by his predecessor Joe Biden for a long time.
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk also called for the publication of materials on the Epstein case on July 13.
In January 2024, the first part of the documents was published, containing the names of more than 150 people involved in the financier's case. Among them are former US President Bill Clinton, Prince Andrew, and Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Nevertheless, in February of this year, the U.S. Attorney General's Office accused the FBI of hiding "thousands of pages of documents" related to the case.
