Former US military man confessed to hacking telecommunications company databases
Former US military officer Cameron John Wagenius pleaded guilty to hacking telecommunications company databases and extortion by blackmail. This was reported on July 15 on the website of the US Department of Justice.
"A former army soldier <...> pleaded guilty to conspiring to hack into telecommunications company databases, gain access to confidential records, and extort telecommunications companies by threatening to disclose stolen data unless a ransom is paid," the department said in a statement.
It is specified that between April 2023 and December 18, 2024, Vagenius conspired with others to defraud at least 10 organizations. So, having received credentials to log into the secure computer networks of these organizations, they used Telegram group chats to transfer stolen data. He will be sentenced on October 6, the Ministry of Justice clarified.
The Australian airline Qantas announced on July 2 that it had been subjected to a cyberattack, which could have resulted in a significant leak of some customer data. Experts found out that the attackers could take over the names, email addresses and phone numbers of customers.
