The specialist spoke about the ways to prepare the car for long-term parking.

In the summer, cars left in yards are increasingly idle for weeks — their owners go to warm places for remote work, someone moves to suburban haciendas or goes on long trips. To keep the car in good condition, it is important to prepare it in advance for prolonged parking. Nikita Rodionov, Technical director of the international franchise network of Fit Service car services, told Izvestia about the key conservation measures on July 19.

"The main thing is to properly prepare the car before a long downtime. The first step is to make sure to fill up the full fuel tank. This will prevent condensation from forming and protect the fuel system from corrosion," explained Rodionov.

According to him, special attention should be paid to the battery. If the battery is old or weak, it may run out due to lack of movement. Therefore, drivers are advised to either disconnect the terminal or remove the battery completely. However, in this case, the alarm system stops working, so it is especially important to take care of the safe parking of your car — for example, an underground parking lot, a guarded parking lot or another place under surveillance.

"If you plan to park your car at the entrance of an ordinary apartment building, it is best to take care of a serviceable and reliable battery and leave the car on the alarm system. I advise you to check the operation of the security system in advance — this will ensure peace of mind during your vacation. It is useful to leave a second car key with relatives and closest friends. They will be able to respond to signals about an accident with a car," the expert added.

Rodionov also reminded that before leaving, the windows and doors must be tightly closed so that dust, dirt or insects do not get into the car interior. Do not park your car under trees, at turns, or near trash cans. The best option is a darkened place or the use of a protective cover to protect the interior and paintwork from the sun and precipitation.

Special attention should be paid to the things in the cabin. All items that may attract the attention of thieves or become a source of fire must be removed. This applies to bags, car seats, recorders, as well as glasses, glass bottles, pressure cans, and lighters.

According to the expert, when parked for a long time, corrosion of the brake discs may begin, rust on the body and suspension may increase, especially during prolonged rains and temperature fluctuations. Therefore, before leaving, it is recommended to thoroughly wash the car, especially the arches, bottom and suspension.

"Sometimes, when the car is idle for a long time, engine oil can drain into the crankcase. Therefore, upon your return, do not rush to start moving. Make sure that the level of technical fluids is normal. It is also important to give the car time to idle for at least 5-10 minutes," Rodionov concluded.

According to him, there should be enough space in the garage for cars, as well as for storing necessary and related items, such as tires and tools. You should not buy garages that are too cramped, there should be about 2 m from the body of the car on all sides.
