A lightning strike can cause any household appliance parts to malfunction. It is almost impossible to predict her behavior. Modern technology is most susceptible to such electrical discharges, Georgy Tsereteli, head of new product development at Ippon, told Izvestia on July 15.

According to him, lightning creates an impulse of hundreds of thousands of volts, which is capable of disabling any equipment connected to the network.

"Even if the impact did not occur nearby, power surges can still lead to overheating, burning of electronic components, loss of data on hard drives, and even fire," the expert noted.

Computers, televisions, routers, and smart home systems were particularly vulnerable. An integrated approach is needed for protection.

"In residential buildings, surge protection devices (USIPS) and differential load switches (RCD) are most often used. A high-quality grounding is critically important, which will lead the discharge into the ground. The last frontier may be a UPS with surge protection," the expert said.

The expert also advised removing the plugs from the sockets, as the switch on the extension cord does not always guarantee safety. The antenna and the TV receiver can cause lightning to attract, so it is also better to disconnect their connectors.

If the equipment is still damaged, the expert recommends not turning it on immediately — this may worsen the damage.

"It is better to consult a professional for diagnosis. If the device is insured, it is important to preserve the traces of damage for the insurance company. In the future, it is worth considering additional protection measures and regularly making backup copies of data," Tsereteli summed up.
