- EU winemakers have criticized plans to include wine in retaliatory duties against the United States
The European wine sector has condemned the European Union's (EU) plans to add grape-based beverages to the list of retaliatory duties against the United States. This was reported on July 15 by the Euractiv portal.
According to Ignacio Sanchez Recarte, head of CEEV, an association representing the interests of European wine companies, the US and EU wine groups "made it clear" that wine should be "kept out of trade disputes" and called on the European Commission (EC) to conclude a trade deal with Washington before August 1, when the common 30% of the US duty on European exports.
"The inclusion of American wines in the list of products for retaliatory measures will not be effective in achieving EU goals. There is no political, strategic or economic interest in their inclusion," Sanchez said.
On July 12, US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 30 percent duties on exports from the European Union from August 1, 2025.
Bloomberg reported on June 25 that EU countries are preparing to take retaliatory measures if the United States imposes duties on goods from Europe. In addition, officials from the association expect that the United States will maintain some duties even after the end of trade negotiations. They are currently preparing a retaliatory list of tariffs on €95 billion worth of American goods.
