On July 14, Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of the German Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice party, called for the restoration of the Nord Stream pipeline in response to duties imposed against Germany by US President Donald Trump.

"Instead of succumbing to Trump's blackmail, Germany and Europe should urgently free themselves from energy and digital dependence on the United States. The first step would be to lift the sanctions on Russia! Repair the Nord Stream!" Wagenknecht wrote on her page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

According to her, the US duties will seriously affect the German industry and lead to job cuts. The politician stressed that Germany needs politicians who will defend the interests of the country and the German people. Wagenknecht also noted that Russian gas is cheaper and less environmentally harmful than American gas.

On July 5, Tino Cavalla, co-chairman of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, said that Germany should resume Russian gas supplies and restore the operation of the Nord Stream. In addition, he called on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to start a dialogue with Russia.
