The German President called for the return of universal military service
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for the return of universal military service in the country. He told about it on July 13 on the ZDF TV channel.
"I am a supporter of universal military service, because I believe that, given the changing security situation in Europe, given that there is a conflict, and given the conclusions we have drawn from it, the Bundeswehr needs personnel to better protect itself," the politician said.
At the same time, he clarified that for this it is necessary to increase the attractiveness of the army for citizens. Steinmeier expressed doubt that it is possible to increase the number of armed forces in the country on a voluntary basis.
"That's why we need to discuss the issue of conscription now, even if we cannot introduce it overnight, because after the abolition of conscription in 2011, the barracks were closed, and all the personnel who had been training up to that point are no longer available," the head of state said.
According to him, Germany should also draw its own conclusions from the conflict in Ukraine.
On July 13, it was also reported that the German authorities will increase spending on civil defense in 2026. The Federal Agency for Technical Assistance (THW) will receive 50% more funding next year than in 2024. Funding for the Federal Agency for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief will be tripled.
