The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on July 13 that the European Union would postpone the introduction of countermeasures against the duties of US President Donald Trump until early August.

"The United States sent us a letter containing measures that will take effect if no negotiated agreement is reached. We will also extend the suspension of our retaliatory measures until early August," von der Leyen said at a press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

According to her, the EU is going to use the time until August 1 for trade negotiations with the United States.

"We can take retaliatory measures, if necessary," the head of the EC concluded.

The day before, Trump announced plans to impose 30 percent duties on exports from the European Union from August 1, 2025.

Ursula von der Leyen, for her part, said that imposing 30 percent duties on EU exports would "disrupt critical transatlantic supply chains," potentially harming businesses and consumers on both sides.
