The Romanian Ministry of Defense plans to spend more than €6 billion to purchase new weapons and modernize the army. This was reported on July 12 by Digi24 TV channel, citing sources.

"A contract worth €2.5 billion is currently being prepared for the purchase of 246 tracked infantry fighting vehicles (infantry fighting vehicles)," the publication says.

€2.7 billion will also be allocated for the purchase of short-range anti-aircraft missiles. In addition, the Romanian army plans to purchase at least 200,000 assault rifles, machine guns, pistols and grenade launchers.

According to the TV channel, Romania also plans to purchase a Turkish corvette worth €200 million and two minesweepers from the UK for €150 million. In addition, anti-ship missiles will be purchased.

The NATO summit ended in The Hague on June 25. Following the meeting, the countries agreed to raise defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP).

After that, on June 26, the heads of the EU member states confirmed the goal of achieving the ability to autonomously solve defense and security tasks in five years by adopting an appropriate document. They also noted the importance of joint projects aimed at improving the defense capabilities of the EU countries.
