Western countries seek to control and influence global shipping routes in order to gain economic benefits. This was announced on July 13 by the Russian Ambassador to Oslo Nikolai Korchunov.

As the diplomat noted, Norway included the provisions of the 17th package of sanctions against naval vessels that were related to the so-called "shadow fleet," including those allegedly related to Russia. He explained that these provisions primarily affected those vessels that belong to companies from the countries of the Global South and fly their flags.

"An analysis of the content of these restrictions, especially in terms of shipping, indicates the desire of Western countries to maintain control over global sea routes, to use administrative and power levers in the interests of their carriers," Korchunov told RIA Novosti.

He noted that this situation is reminiscent of past experiences when colonial countries sought to control sea routes in order to extract unilateral economic benefits.

In addition, the head of the diplomatic mission also drew attention to the fact that NATO countries want to restrict freedom of navigation in the Baltic region. According to him, this is evidenced, among other things, by the mission of the Baltic Sentry Alliance, which is to strengthen the grouping of the navy. The Russian ambassador added that this was the reason for the increased risk of possible escalation in the region.

Korchunov also stressed that all States must comply with the norms of international maritime law. He also noted that at the moment, the forces and facilities of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Federation ensure freedom of navigation in the interests of both Russia and third countries.

Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin said on July 12 that the Baltic Sea will continue to be a common space for all states in the region, despite the military plans and ambitions of NATO countries. He noted that the course towards the militarization of the Baltic, chosen by the alliance, is a "dead-end" strategy.
