A child died as a result of measles infection amid an epidemic in the city of Liverpool in the UK due to a drop in vaccination rates. This was reported on July 12 by The Times newspaper.

"A child died after contracting measles amid public health warnings about the dangers of lowering vaccination rates. <...> This child became the first to die from an acute measles infection in the UK this decade," the newspaper noted.

The newspaper clarified that he was one of the first 17 people to be hospitalized at the beginning of the measles epidemic. There is no information about whether the deceased baby was vaccinated.

"Experts say that vaccination provides 97% protection against the disease," The Times emphasized.

Earlier in the day, it was reported about Senator Chuck Schumer's call to U.S. Secretary of Health Kennedy Jr. to declare an emergency due to an outbreak of measles. In a letter to Kennedy, Schumer argued that this step was necessary to control the dynamics of the increase in the incidence.
