Specialists from the Blokhin National Research Medical Center of Oncology in Moscow performed an operation to remove half of the body for a patient with skin cancer. This was reported on July 12 in the press service of the medical institution.
"Surgeons at the N. N. Blokhin National Research Medical Center of Oncology of the Russian Ministry of Health performed a rare operation — hemicorporectomy, or removal of half of the body, to a 43-year—old patient from the city of Vyazma, Smolensk region," RIA Novosti quotes a fragment of the statement.
It is noted that the patient had been paralyzed for 25 years due to an injury sustained as a result of the accident, he was forced to use a wheelchair. He was also diagnosed with skin cancer in 2024.
Hemicorporectomy was the only way to save the patient's life.
"In our country, such an operation has been performed only once before, and the number of such operations in the world is 80," said Renat Valiev, head of the NMC Oncology Department.
It is specified that the operation took place under the supervision of the chief freelance oncologist of the Russian Ministry of Health and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Ivan Stilidi and lasted 12 hours. After it was completed, the patient spent three more weeks in the hospital, and then was sent home.
On June 15, Russian scientists from Rosatom developed a domestic drug aimed at combating oncological diseases. Previously, it was produced only in one country, now it will be manufactured in Russia and using domestic raw materials.
