The EU announced the need to take countermeasures due to Trump's duties
The European Union (EU) must take countermeasures due to US President Donald Trump's planned increase in import duties on goods against the community in August. This was announced on July 12 by the head of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee, Bernd Lange.
A senior European lawmaker said on Saturday that Brussels should immediately take countermeasures in response to Trump's "outrageous" threat to raise tariffs on imports from the European Union.
The official said that the EU had been negotiating with US representatives for more than three weeks and had even agreed to make concessions to resolve the tariff situation. So, one of the steps was the suspension of already existing countermeasures introduced after Trump increased import duties from the European Community by 20% in April.
Earlier in the day, Trump announced the imposition of duties of 30% on EU goods from August 1. Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto blamed the introduction of tariffs on the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen. In turn, Von der Leyen threatened the United States with countermeasures in the event of the imposition of duties against the EU.
