The Shulgan-Tash cave, located in the Republic of Bashkortostan, where drawings of primitive man were found, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The decision was made on July 12 at the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

"The Shulgan-Tash cave is unique in its geography, the age of the drawings, the technique of their execution, the original symbols and the untouched archaeological context preserving the research potential," Danir Gaynullin, Vice president of the National Committee of ICOMOS of Russia, who headed the delegation of Bashkortostan at the session, told Izvestia.

He noted that UNESCO status means the highest recognition of outstanding value and a guarantee of safety with the support of the international community.

The Shulgan-Tash cave is located on the territory of the Burzyansky district of Bashkortostan. This is the largest multi-storey karst cave in the Southern Urals region. The total length of the investigated passages is more than 3 km. Rock carvings of ancient people were discovered in it.

Earlier in the day, the "Maratha Military Landscapes" in India were officially included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Thus, the total number of sites in India included in the UNESCO World Heritage List has reached 44.
