The head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, announced the readiness of the European Union (EU) to take retaliatory measures if the United States imposes 30 percent duties on European goods from August 1.

"We will take all necessary steps to protect the interests of the EU, including taking proportionate countermeasures if necessary," von der Leyen said in a statement posted on the EC's official website.

She stressed that the imposition of 30 percent duties on EU exports would "disrupt critical transatlantic supply chains," potentially harming businesses and consumers on both sides.

"The EU has consistently given priority to negotiations with the United States, which reflects our commitment to dialogue, stability and constructive transatlantic partnership," the EC president concluded.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 30 percent duties on exports from the European Union from August 1, 2025.

Bloomberg reported on June 25 that EU countries are preparing to take retaliatory measures if the United States imposes duties on goods from Europe. In addition, officials from the association expect that the United States will maintain some duties even after the end of trade negotiations. They are currently preparing a retaliatory list of tariffs on €95 billion worth of American goods.
