The unification of Germany unilaterally turned out to be a gross mistake on the part of the USSR. This was announced on July 12 by former Russian Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin.

"I think our biggest mistake was the unilateral decision to unite Germany. There was no need to hurry," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to Stepashin, the process of German unification does not correspond to the norms of international law, since no referendum was held.

"They got sick. And then they also owed the Germans. I flew to Cologne for the G8 when I was prime minister. We then agreed to write off $32 billion of debts. We also owed the Germans, having given everything," Stepashin added.

On June 23, Matthias Mosdorf, a member of the Bundestag from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, condemned the distortion of history and called for peace with Russia. He noted that Germany, until recently one of the most respected countries among Russians, has dropped by almost 20 positions in popularity ratings — now Germans are perceived as a threat in Russia.
