- An agreement on the creation of a new state of New Caledonia has been signed in France.
Supporters and opponents of independence in the French territory of New Caledonia reached a compromise during a meeting in the suburbs of Paris on the creation of a state of the same name. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on July 12.
"Competing political movements discussing the future of New Caledonia on Saturday morning announced an agreement on the creation of a new state, which, however, will not be completely independent from France," the article says.
It is noted that the document will provide New Caledonia with broad autonomy and transfer of powers in the field of international relations to the new state. In addition, separate citizenship of New Caledonia will be introduced.
As specified, French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou called this document "an agreement of historical significance."
On April 5, the newspaper Le Figaro reported that the French government expresses concerns about the possible interest of the United States in annexing its territories, similar to the situation with Greenland. It clarifies that the country's overseas territories, such as New Caledonia, may be under threat.
