An increase in flare activity has begun on the Sun. This was announced on July 12 on the official website of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy, the Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS) in partnership with the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISSF SB RAS).

"Since the middle of yesterday, there has been a rapid increase in the number and area of active centers on the Sun, including on the far side, invisible from Earth <...> In other words, the increase in activity is global," the Laboratory's website says.

It is noted that from July 11 to July 12, 17 solar flares occurred, which is three times higher than the average values in July.

As reported, the current increase in activity has not created any direct threats to Earth at the moment.

On July 5, the press service of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI RAS reported that a record-breaking large prominence was recorded on the Sun. It was noted that a plasma structure measuring more than 1 million km was ejected towards the North Pole of the Solar System between 09:00 and 14:00 Moscow time.
