Russian Ambassador to Denmark criticized NATO's activity in the Baltic Sea region
The Baltic Sea will continue to be a common space for all the states of the region, despite the military plans and ambitions of the NATO countries. This was announced on July 12 by Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin.
According to Barbin, regardless of what the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance have "dreamed up", the principles of openness and equal access to the water area will remain unchanged. He noted that the course of militarization of the Baltic, chosen by NATO, is a "dead end" strategy. The diplomat also drew attention to the fact that the growth of military activity does not reduce, but rather increases the likelihood of conflict, especially in the absence of direct dialogue and trust between Moscow and the bloc.
"International law guarantees freedom of navigation in the Baltic Sea beyond the territorial seas of coastal states and unhindered passage through the straits," the Russian ambassador added in an interview with RIA Novosti.
On June 25, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko announced the transformation of the Baltic Sea region into a zone of confrontation between NATO and Russia. Then he clarified that the alliance had ideas to turn the Baltic Sea into an "internal sea of NATO." According to him, similar plans are being hatched for the Black Sea.
