The Supreme Court of Argentina has ordered former President Alberto Fernandez and other defendants in the case, former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and others convicted in the Vialidad case to pay more than 684 billion pesos (more than $36.7 billion) in damages. This was reported by La Nación newspaper on July 12.
"This figure corresponds to the update of the original confiscation order in the amount of 84 million pesos, which was issued in a court decision dated December 6, 2022. According to the official dollar exchange rate, the total amount exceeds $540 million," the publication says.
It is noted that the defendants in the case were given a 10-day deadline for damages. Otherwise, the property will be confiscated and put up for auction. It is specified that 213 real estate objects, 14 vehicles and six companies are suitable for this.
Earlier, on July 11, former Argentine President Alberto Fernandez was prosecuted for corruption in concluding insurance contracts with government agencies. Fernandez promoted the interests of broker Hector Martinez Sosa, who was part of his inner circle, and his wife and former secretary Maria Cantero. About 40 persons involved in the crime were found in this case. All of them are accused of joint coordinated and functional interference in the scheme of collecting and distributing public funds.
