In summer, a person saturates the body with seasonal fruits and berries, unaware that excessive consumption of them causes bloating or flatulence. About why intestinal discomfort appears and how to prevent it, July 11, Gazeta.Ru" was told by a nutritionist, nutritionist at the SM Clinic Nadezhda Litvinova-Grazion.

Bloating, according to the doctor, may occur due to the high sugar content in fruits and berries, especially the high concentration of fructose.

"Seasonal fruits are a significant source of simple carbohydrates (sugars), which is a nutrient substrate or food for the gut microbiome. When consumed in large quantities <... The microbiome, including pathogenic flora, can provoke gas formation," Litvinova-Grazion said.

Separately, the nutritionist noted that the high fiber content can also cause intestinal discomfort.

"In addition, fiber can stimulate the activity of intestinal bacteria and, as a result, cause increased gas formation. In people with sensitive intestines or impaired microflora, these processes may be enhanced," the specialist explained.

To avoid flatulence, the nutritionist recommended introducing seasonal fruits and berries gradually to adapt the body to the consumption of the resulting enzymes.

"Combine fruits with other foods. It is best to combine them with protein foods or with other foods that do not provoke sudden spikes in blood sugar," said Litvinova—Grazion.

She also advised giving preference to berries rather than fruits, because they contain less fructose, and therefore the risk of bloating is low.

Earlier, on June 27, Svetlana Burnatskaya, a general practitioner and occupational therapist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), spoke about proper nutrition in the heat. According to the expert, it is better to choose light foods such as vegetables, fruits, berries and greens.
