In Russia, the mechanisms for determining the admission of people over the age of 60 to driving need to be improved. This is evidenced on July 11 by the text of the draft Strategy for improving road safety until 2030 and for the future until 2036.

As indicated in the draft, road safety among the older generation has been deteriorating for several years. It is noted that in the period from 2017 to 2024, the number of accidents caused by drivers over the age of 60 increased by 25%. At the same time, the number of deaths as a result of accidents increased by 33%, and the number of injured — by 22%.

According to the text of the draft, such drivers most often act as the perpetrators of accidents in comparison with citizens of other age groups. It is also specified that people of this age account for more than a third of the total number of dead pedestrians and cyclists.

"The above will require the adaptation of older people to safe participation in road traffic, the improvement of mechanisms for determining their suitability for safe participation in road traffic, primarily as drivers, as well as the development of appropriate infrastructure and vehicle design," the draft, which was reviewed by TASS.

Earlier in the day, regional traffic police departments announced mass and continuous checks of drivers over the coming weekend, from July 12 to 13. It was clarified that special attention will be paid to identifying motorists driving while intoxicated.
