Death toll at protests in Kenya rises to 38
The number of victims of anti-government protests in Kenya has reached 38. This was reported by the Kenyan National Human Rights Commission (KNCHR).
"The Commission notes that the death toll today as of 18:00 (local time, coincides with Moscow time. — Ed.) increased to 38 people," the message on the organization's website says.
In addition, at least 130 people were injured, who are receiving care at home and in medical institutions.
"The Commission demands that the Ministry of Health immediately and unconditionally cancel all medical bills issued to victims of the demonstrations," the KNCHR added.
Kenyan President William Ruto said on July 9 that he would fight participants in anti-government demonstrations, which resulted in deaths and destruction of the country's infrastructure. In his address, he called for the responsibility of the organizers of the demonstrations and those who sponsor protests and riots in the country.
A wave of protests broke out on June 25 amid police brutality against local residents in 27 districts of the country. Thousands of young people headed to the central business district of the capital Nairobi. Law enforcement officers used "excessive force" against the protesters, including rubber bullets, live ammunition and water cannons.
