The doctor warned about the health risks of smoking in the heat
In summer, the harm from smoking becomes even more noticeable. Heat combined with nicotine can significantly increase the load on the cardiovascular system and provoke serious complications. Shota Kalandiya, a general practitioner and gastroenterologist at the SM Clinic, told Izvestia about this on July 17.
According to the expert, smoking in hot weather increases vasoconstriction, accelerates the pulse rate and increases blood pressure. All this increases the likelihood of developing heart and vascular diseases, including hypertension, stroke and heart attack.
"Against the background of heat, the body is already stressed, and smoking increases blood viscosity and platelet levels. As a result, the risk of thrombosis increases. Especially if a person drinks little water," the doctor warned.
In addition, as the specialist recalled, smoking worsens blood oxygen saturation and reduces the overall tone of the body. In the heat, this can lead to severe fatigue, irritability, decreased concentration, and general weakness.
"When there is already not enough air, and a person smokes, this further worsens the supply of oxygen to tissues. Blood circulation is disrupted, metabolism slows down, and performance suffers," explained Kalandia.
The doctor urged to pay special attention to your well-being in hot weather and, if possible, give up smoking at least for a period of high fever.
On July 10, Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nana Pogosova told Izvestia about the dangers of an ice shower in the heat. So, cold water causes a sharp narrowing of blood vessels, including skin capillaries, which prevents the body from cooling naturally. At the same time, there is a centralization of blood flow, leading to spikes in blood pressure and increased heart rate.
