- The Federation Council accused Merz of fomenting World War II with statements about the militarization of Germany
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's calls for militarization are leading to the risk of a world war. Grigory Karasin, Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, told Izvestia on July 11.
According to him, Merz became significantly "carried away by Germanophilia and a passion for military solutions."
"Germany is still a part of the international community. There is no need to put forward such loud, passionate initiatives and appeals. We need to understand the situation, get in touch, negotiate, exchange information and look for some kind of compromise," the expert noted.
He stressed that for European countries at the moment there are direct risks of a world war or a large-scale military confrontation.
"The most direct risks of a world war or a large-scale military confrontation in Europe. Actually, all the calls of not only Merz, but also other European leaders lead to this, with rare exceptions," Karasin said.
The chairman of the Federation Council Committee pointed out that the militarization of Germany is already leading to a new arms race on the continent, similar to the one that was already observed before the Second World War. At the same time, the German Chancellor's statements are perceived by NATO as a call to action, he added.
"It's time to come to your senses and return to the normal course of events, which would not portend a major war," concluded Karasin.
Earlier that day, Bogdan Bezpalko, a political scientist and member of the Russian Presidential Council on Interethnic Relations, told Izvestia that the militarization of Germany, which the current German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is striving for, is pushing the country towards a military conflict. According to the expert, in the context of the Second World War, Germany's actions look ambiguous.
Also on July 11, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the German Chancellor had decided to engage in the final militarization of Germany, because he believes that diplomatic methods to resolve the Ukrainian conflict have been exhausted. The Russian Foreign Minister also called Merz's statement that Russia allegedly poses a threat to European countries complete nonsense.
