A contaminated cooler can cause bacterial infection, for example, E. coli. In addition, due to the accumulation of mold, scale or organic residues, the taste and smell of water deteriorate. "The contamination or malfunction of the cooler can be determined by its appearance. For example, water droplets on the case indicate a leak. Dust and dirt on the ventilation grilles impair the cooling of the compressor. In addition, the smell of mold or mustiness signals bacterial contamination, and rust and cracks can cause the cooler to break down," Chikhrinova said.
She clarified that water leaks can occur due to the wear of gaskets, cracks in the bottle or improper installation. Due to overheating of the tubular electric heater (TEN) and leakage of freon, a heating or cooling malfunction occurs. And because of mineral deposits or bacterial plaque, the taps are clogged.
The cooler must be sanitized every 3-6 months. It includes complete disassembly of the cooler, flushing of internal tanks, disinfection of pipes and taps, as well as descaling and bacterial deposits. If the device is used by more than 10 people a day, it is better to clean it every three months.
"Filters in coolers with a built-in cleaning system must be replaced with the same frequency — once every 3-6 months. Polluted filters not only stop purifying water, but also become a source of bacteria themselves. If the water is cloudy or has an off—taste, the filter change cannot be postponed," the expert explained.
It is necessary to disinfect the taps once a month — they are often touched by hands. It is also important to flush the pan to avoid stagnation of water and the appearance of mold. The expert recommends flushing the drainage holes in the cooler with a weak solution of citric acid. Once a year, the cooler requires technical diagnostics: checking the compressor, heating element and electronics. Ignoring this step can lead to a decrease in heating and cooling efficiency, and further damage to the device.
"There are a number of malfunctions in which you should not delay calling a professional service. If the water does not heat up or cool down, the heating element or compressor may have burned out. In addition, constant cooler leaks increase the risk of a short circuit. And if there is a burning smell and sparks are visible, the cooler may burn out," Chikhrinova added.
She talked about simple steps that can be performed independently to identify a cooler malfunction. To check the heating, pour a glass of water and measure the temperature with a thermometer — it should be at least 85 degrees. And for cooling, you need to turn on the cooler and check the water two or three minutes after that - it should be noticeably cold. If the light bulbs are on, but the water is not heating or cooling, repairs are necessary. It is also important to inspect the wires for damage and regularly clean the fans from dust.
"There are several common misconceptions, for example, if the water is hot or cold, it means that the cooler is clean. In fact, bacteria actively multiply inside the device, regardless of the temperature," the expert shared.
The expert reminded that you should not wash the cooler with aggressive household chemicals — it spoils the plastic and leaves toxins. Soft wipes with soap solution are suitable for regular care, special tablets based on citric acid or chloramine are suitable for internal disinfection, and vinegar solution (1:3) or professional products are suitable for descaling.
