German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is pursuing a policy of militarization of the country, such actions resemble Nazi ideology. This opinion was shared by political scientist Ivan Mezyuho in an interview with Izvestia on July 11.

"Friedrich Merz is frankly lying when he says that diplomatic methods to resolve the Ukrainian crisis have been exhausted. In fact, diplomatic methods have not been used to their full potential during the entire time of the special military operation," Mezyuho said.

According to him, Russia is ready to resolve the conflict peacefully, but Ukraine and the West are blocking negotiations.

"The Russian Federation always leaves the doors open, so our president has taken the initiative to resume the Istanbul process, which, by and large, the Ukrainian side is again ignoring today," the political scientist stressed.

He also linked Merz's militaristic policies to domestic political problems.

"Merz was elected chancellor for the second time. His ratings are going down. The level of popular legitimacy is declining. And with such militaristic activity, he is trying to improve his political position," the expert said.

In addition, the political scientist drew a parallel between Merz and his grandfather, who served during World War II.

"Friedrich Merz, apparently, professes the same principles of life as his grandfather Joseph Paul Sauvigny, who was an Obercharfuhrer and served the Third Reich. Thus, we can say that today Merc is a conductor of neo—Nazi ideology," concluded Mezyuho.

Earlier, on July 11, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Merz had finally decided to engage in the militarization of Germany, because he believes that diplomatic methods to resolve the conflict in Ukraine have been exhausted. The head of the department also stressed that the Chancellor had repeatedly talked about his main task — to turn Germany into the leading military power in Europe.
