Chlorine used to disinfect pool water is capable of oxidizing proteins, including collagen and elastin, which leads to loss of skin elasticity and the formation of wrinkles. Elizaveta Shukhman, a dermatologist and cosmetologist at JSC Meditsina (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia about the negative effects of chlorinated water on the skin on July 11.

According to her, chloramines, compounds formed when chlorine interacts with sweat and cosmetics, are particularly dangerous. These substances irritate the skin, increase inflammatory processes and can provoke anhidrosis, exacerbating the signs of aging.

To protect the skin, the doctor recommends applying a waterproof cream with an SPF filter before visiting the pool. After swimming, it is necessary to thoroughly wash off the chlorinated water in the shower using mild cleansers.

"Additional protection will be provided by the use of moisturizers and oils before and after water treatments, as well as the use of special swimsuits with protective properties," the dermatologist shared.

Prolonged exposure to chlorinated water can cause skin dehydration, peeling, contact dermatitis, and pore enlargement. Over time, those who frequent the pool experience increased skin sensitivity to ultraviolet light and temperature fluctuations, and age spots appear.

"Regular exposure to chlorine makes the skin more vulnerable. It is important not only to minimize contact with chlorinated water, but also to provide the skin with proper care after visiting the pool," concluded Shukhman.

Earlier, on April 16, Natalia Mikhailova, a cosmetologist and creator of the MESALTERA by Dr. Mikhaylova brand of professional cosmeceuticals, told Izvestia that mild cleansers should be used in the warm season — foams, gels or mousses with the addition of acids or enzymes.
