Every year on July 12, Orthodox believers celebrate the Day of Remembrance of the First-born Apostles Peter and Paul. They are called teachers among teachers and are revered as the founders of the Christian Church. Peter and Paul Day is one of the great church holidays. Such celebrations are inferior in importance to the twelve, that is, they are associated with the main events of the life of Christ and the Virgin, but they have a deep meaning and are celebrated in a special way. They also include the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Nativity of John the Baptist, the Circumcision of the Lord, and others.

Despite the fact that all the apostles are equal, Peter and Paul received special veneration. They made the greatest contribution to the spread of the Christian faith, for which they received the title of the first-born. A holiday in their honor was established already in the first centuries of our era, and in the IV century, by order of Emperor Constantine the Great, temples began to be erected in their honor.

Before meeting Christ, the apostle Peter was named Simon. Together with his brother Andrew, the future Apostle Andrew the First-Called, he earned his living by fishing. Simon was just an ordinary hard worker, illiterate and simple-minded. However, it was in him that the Savior saw a force capable of forming the basis of the Christian Church. It was not for nothing that he named his disciple Cephas (Peter), which means "stone" in Hebrew.

Peter participated in many evangelical events. He witnessed the Transfiguration of the Lord on Mount Tabor, attended the Last Supper, and saw his teacher arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane. He denied Christ, but then sincerely repented and was forgiven. After the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the apostle preached in many lands, including Rome.

Paul, unlike the other apostles, believed in Christ after the Resurrection of the Lord. Before joining the missionary path, he was named Saul and was one of the most ardent persecutors of Christians. But one day, on his way to Damascus, he was illuminated by a bright light, and an invisible voice said: "Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?" and then ordered me to go to Damascus. After that, Saul became blind and was able to reach the city only with the help of his companions. There he was baptized under the name Pavel and, having regained his eyesight, became one of the most convinced preachers of Christianity.

Both of the first apostles were martyred in Rome under Emperor Nero. Peter was crucified upside down on a cross — he himself asked to be hanged in this way, as he considered himself unworthy to die as a Savior. Paul, as a Roman citizen, was sentenced to a more humane execution by beheading. The feast in honor of the saints appeared soon after their death, and since the fourth century, when the first churches of Peter and Paul were built in Rome and Constantinople, the celebration has become more widespread.

For modern Christians, Peter and Paul Memorial Day is also of great importance. It is preceded by the Apostolic, or Peter's, fast, which begins a week after Trinity and ends on July 11, on the eve of the feast. Believers visit churches, pray to the holy apostles, visit relatives or invite them to their homes.
