DM reported on the approach of a colony of "super ants" to the UK
Colonies of "super ants" numbering up to 5 million individuals have been discovered in the UK. This was reported by the Daily Mail (DM) on July 10.
"Their scientific name is Tapinoma magnum, but invasive species are more often described as "super ants". <...> One way to distinguish them is that, unlike black ants, which tend to move in single file, <...> super ants move in conspicuous, very lively columns that often reach several meters. in length," the newspaper explained.
As the newspaper reported, the whole of Europe suffers from insects, as ants harm human life by destroying urban infrastructure and tearing up land in rural areas. Cases of gnawed electrical cables and disruption of the railway network have been reported.
"Ants cause significant damage, especially in areas with predominantly sandy soil," explained entomologist Dr. Bernhard Seifert.
According to DM, this ant species is not venomous, but Tapinoma magnum bites can irritate the skin.
The Ministry of the Environment, Food and Agriculture of Great Britain announced the monitoring of the spread of these insects.
Earlier, on June 17, quarantine was established in three forestry districts of the Trans-Baikal Territory in connection with the discovery of a black pine barbel. The export of wood and felling residues is prohibited in the territories.
