Poor sleep makes it difficult to control weight due to hormonal imbalance, increased cravings for sweets, less energy, slower metabolism and stress. Read more about this "Newspaper.Ru" was told on July 11 by Maxim Novikov, somnologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg clinic).

According to the doctor, sleep directly affects the production of hormones that are responsible for hunger and satiety.

"When you don't get enough sleep, the level of ghrelin, the hormone that causes hunger, increases in the body, and the level of leptin, responsible for feeling full, decreases. As a result, even after a hearty meal, you may feel that you are still hungry," the doctor explained.

In addition, chronic lack of sleep causes the adrenal glands to produce the hormone of "bad stress" — cortisol. Unlike adrenaline, which usually helps a person lose weight, the production of cortisol provokes overeating.

The somnologist said that lack of sleep leads to cravings for "fast carbohydrates" — sweet, flour, fast food. They give a false saturation effect, which disappears faster than after a balanced meal.

Not getting enough sleep can lead to fatigue and, consequently, reduced activity during the day.

"The less you move, the fewer calories you burn, and this exacerbates the effects of overeating," the expert noted.

Chronic lack of sleep, according to the doctor, leads to a decrease in metabolism, which prevents weight loss.

The doctor recommended that you pay attention to sleep if you want to lose weight.

"7-9 hours of proper rest is not a luxury, but a physiological necessity. Getting enough sleep doesn't just restore your strength, you help your body work in harmony, reduce the urge to overeat, and give yourself a chance to feel and look better," the sleep therapist advised.

Earlier, on June 28, endocrinologist and Doctor of Medical Sciences Maria Matveeva warned about the dangers of weight loss drugs. According to the doctor, there are drugs whose side effect affects the digestive system, and some of them negatively affect brain function.
