Former Brazilian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro said that under his presidency, the United States would not have imposed 50% duties. Bolsonaro announced this on July 10 on the social network Facebook (owned by Meta, whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

He agreed with the position of US President Donald Trump regarding the alleged lack of freedom of speech and choice in the country and the intention to suppress it.

"I express my respect and admiration for the United States Government. This measure is a direct consequence of Brazil's departure from its historical commitments to freedom, the rule of law and values. <...> This would never have happened under my rule," Bolsonaro wrote.

He also noted that Brazil has become an authoritarian country that is nearing isolation and international disgrace. In the Latin American country, according to the former president, there is no freedom of speech, press, conscience and political participation.

Earlier, on July 9, Trump imposed trade duties of 50% on goods from Brazil, he sent a corresponding letter on July 9 on behalf of the White House. The law will be put into effect on August 1. The current president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, criticized the letter, noting the unfairness of Trump's statements.
