The French Ministry of the Armed Forces has unveiled a defense strategy in the Arctic aimed at strengthening its influence in the region. This was announced on July 10 on the official website of the department.

According to the document, France's defense strategy appeared in connection with changes in world politics and the increasing influence of some countries in the Arctic region.

"This strategic shift reinforces the importance of Arctic issues for the security of the Euro—Atlantic region and enhances the dynamics of competition, militarization and the security of critical resources," the document says.

According to the strategy, France intends to deploy its armed forces in the region, support the influence of the European Union (EU) and NATO countries, as well as ensure the supply of energy and mining industries to the country and the EU.

In this regard, France intends to actively participate in Arctic forums, activate the country's armed forces in the Arctic, maintain cooperation with seven countries with influence in the Arctic and members of NATO, as well as develop its own equipment for the Arctic space.

Earlier in the day, the Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine of the United States Navy, the USS Newport News, stopped in Iceland for the first time. American Admiral Stuart Munsch noted that this can be considered a signal of the preparation of NATO countries for the development of the Arctic strategy of the alliance.
