The UN called on the United States to lift sanctions against Special Rapporteur Albanese

The United Nations (UN) has called on the United States to lift sanctions against its special Rapporteur on human rights in Palestine, Francesca Albanese. This was reported on the organization's website on July 10.

"United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has called on the United States to immediately lift the sanctions imposed on the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Francesca Albanese," the statement said.

Turk stressed that the UN special Rapporteurs have to touch upon "sensitive and controversial topics" in the course of their work. However, in order to resolve the contradictions, States should engage in constructive dialogue rather than trying to reduce the situation to the use of "punitive measures."

"The High Commissioner called for an end to attacks and threats against special procedures mandate holders, as well as key institutions, including the International Criminal Court (ICC. — Ed.)," the UN reported.

Earlier in the day, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern about the increased level of politicization and confrontation in the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). According to the ministry, the Russian side noted the importance of joint efforts to ensure that human rights become a factor contributing to rapprochement and strengthening mutual respect in international relations.
