The European Union (EU) no longer believes in the possibility of restoring the relations with the United States that were established before the return of the current American leader Donald Trump to the White House. This was announced on July 10 by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen during a speech at an industrial forum in Rome.

"We believe that duties are a loss for everyone. A tax on industry. A tax on people. But we are not naive either: We know that relations with the United States may never return to their previous level," the ANSA news agency quoted her as saying.

At the same time, according to her, the EU is working tirelessly to achieve an initial understanding with the United States. Von der Leyen added that the European Union also continues to negotiate with Washington on a complete waiver of trade duties, but she did not express optimism about this.

The head of the EC noted that Brussels is currently working hard to strengthen and diversify trade relations with other countries. She stressed that 80% of the bloc's foreign trade is accounted for by non-US-affiliated partners.

She called the restoration of industry the main priority of the EC. According to her, the European Union will also seek to trade mainly with states that are close to them in ideology.

On June 27, Politico newspaper reported on von der Leyen's proposal to cooperate the efforts of the EU countries and the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (CPTPP) to create a new trade union. It was clarified that the United States would not be automatically invited to the new bloc.
