Winter in early July: hail and hurricanes came to the regions of Russia
Bad weather covered a number of cities and regions across Russia: in Omsk, snowdrifts formed after hail, and in the Yaroslavl region, the wind felled trees and disabled power lines. The Moscow region was also affected by the elements. Read more about the consequences in the Izvestia article.
Power outage in the Moscow region
The north-west of the Moscow region, including Istra and Khimki, was affected by the cyclone on July 9. The wind knocked down more than 50 trees. There were no casualties. According to the latest data, a total of 14 cars were damaged in the Moscow region due to fallen trees, and lights went out in 73 settlements.
As Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, reported on his Telegram channel, a hurricane was even recorded in the Moscow region.
"At Sheremetyevo airport, from 17:16 to 17:25 Moscow time, the wind reached hurricane—force values of 33 m/s. On the Beaufort scale, this is the maximum 12-point storm!" he wrote.
According to data from July 10, ROSSETI Moscow Region specialists continue to eliminate the effects of the thunderstorm cyclone, electricity supply has been restored to 70% of residents of areas affected by bad weather. The work is carried out around the clock by 123 teams (322 specialists) and with the involvement of 135 units of special equipment and 38 backup sources of electricity supply and will continue until the full restoration of electricity supply to consumers, the company said.
Hail the size of a cherry tree in Omsk
Natural disasters have also affected some cities in Siberia. On July 9, Omsk was hit by heavy rain, accompanied by cherry-sized hail and a thunderstorm, while the wind knocked people off their feet and bent trees. Local residents reported snowdrifts formed after the hail and damaged plants in the garden. Large hailstones were not seen in the whole city, but in some areas: Aviagorodka, Staryi Kirovsk, the area of the railway station and the television station.
This is not the first time in recent weeks that Omsk has been affected by bad weather. On June 23, large hail had already fallen there, and on July 4, the city was covered by a hurricane. It was reported that the squally wind felled trees, tore roofs from houses and even damaged brick walls. Five people were injured, among them a woman, on whom the balcony fell.
It was also reported that state or regional payments for the damage caused by the disaster are not provided. All compensation issues must be resolved individually through the courts.
Rain with thunderstorm and hurricane in Yaroslavl on July 9th
Bad weather also covered Yaroslavl, where heavy rain with thunderstorms and wind lasted about 20 minutes, but caused significant damage. Several dozen fallen trees were seen in the region, and cars were damaged. The consequences of the rampant disaster are still being eliminated.
One of the trees knocked over a lamppost, which fell on a 12-year-old boy. The child will spend the rest of the summer in the hospital, he has been diagnosed with various fractures and injuries. The boy's life is not in danger, he has been operated on, and he is in a moderate condition.
It is already known that a criminal case has been opened on the fact of negligence. An investigation will be conducted to determine the causes of the incident, and investigators will find out whether the fall of the lantern was caused by strong winds or an insufficiently reinforced lighting mast. At the same time, local residents believe that untimely sawing of trees could lead to large-scale consequences.
July 10 storm in the Novgorod region
On the night of July 10, a storm swept through the Novgorod region, where 51 high-voltage power lines were damaged due to thunderstorms and gusty winds. The accidents affected Batetsky, Lyubytinsky and Khvoyninsky districts. In total, 388 settlements, where more than 14 thousand people live, were left without electricity.
The Novgorod branch of PJSC ROSSETI North-West operates in a special mode. The consequences of the storm are being eliminated by 50 power engineering teams.
The Pskov region was hit by bad weather
In the Pskov region, due to the storm, the most damage was recorded in the Velikiye Luki district.: These are dozens of fallen trees, power line breaks, and damaged roofs in many houses. The consequences of the storm will be eliminated by 90 teams of power engineers. They work around the clock. 89 units of equipment were involved.
According to preliminary data, there were no casualties.
The village in Kuzbass was isolated due to bad weather
It was reported on July 9 that bad weather would also hit the Kemerovo region. Heavy rains led to a landslide, as a result of which the village of Orton, which is part of the Kuzbass city of Mezhdurechensk, was isolated. According to data from July 10, the flooding has stopped, but the road to the village remains closed to cars. Only large vehicles can pass through there, for example, Ural, which keep in touch with the village, deliver food, water and medicines there.
