Large-scale excavations at the site of the ancient city will start in Yamal
Large-scale archaeological excavations on the territory of the Mangazey settlement will take place in Yamal from August 1 to September 15. The research is planned in the Tazovsky and Krasnoselkupsky districts within the framework of the project "Holy First Martyr Vasily Mangazeysky".
At the first stage of the project, scientists studied archives, including the Life of Vasily Mangazeysky and materials from the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts of the 17th century. A scientific reconstruction of the events was prepared by historian Ilya Gorshkov, an expert on Siberian cities and ancient Russian iconography, writes <url> news agency with reference to the portal of the government of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District.
In August, experts will explore the temple architecture and religious life of the ancient city for the first time. Previously, they were practically not studied. In order to increase the accuracy of the study, modern methods such as geo-scanning and aerial photography using drones will be applied.
Experts need to establish the exact location of the church, the chapel above the saint's grave, and the voivodeship courtyard. This is necessary in order to clarify the details of the life of Vasily Mangazeysky and to explore more deeply the history of Mangazeya, the causes of its decline, and in general to learn more about the formation of Orthodoxy in Yamal.
The project is being implemented by the Siberian Heritage NGO with the support of a grant from the Governor in the amount of 4.6 million rubles and co-financing from the Presidential Grants Fund. These funds will be used to organize an expedition, purchase equipment and transport. The money will also be used to pay for specialists and attract volunteers. In addition, an educational block for conducting archaeological work will be organized for the participants.
Based on the results of the research, scientists will create a database of historical sources about the life of Vasily Mangazeysky and the architecture of Mangazeya. Experts expect that this will fill in the gaps in the history of the region and will become the basis for the development of Yamal's tourism potential.
Earlier, on July 10, it was reported that a group of Egyptologists from Italy announced the discovery of a hidden underground city located under the Egyptian pyramids in Giza. They managed to discover a colossal vertical shaft leading to the Sphinx, and two chambers beneath it.
