The Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine of the United States Navy (Navy), the USS Newport News, stopped in Iceland for the first time. This was reported on July 9 by the Business Insider (BI) portal, citing sources.

"The first visit of its kind to the Scandinavian island nation by an attack submarine <...> comes at a time when the United States and NATO allies <...> are looking at Russia's growing military activity in the Arctic and the Far North," the portal said in a statement.

American Admiral Stuart Munsch noted that the entry of submarines into the port of Iceland can be considered a signal of the preparation of NATO countries for the development of the Arctic strategy of the alliance.

Earlier, on June 30, Russian Ambassador Nikolai Korchunov pointed to NATO's attempts to involve Svalbard in military preparations. The ambassador added that, contrary to the international legal regime established by the Svalbard Treaty of 1920, attempts are being made to involve Svalbard in Norway's military-political planning orbit with the involvement of the United States and NATO.
