The US Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Education over the admission of transgender people (LGBT people, whose movement is banned in Russia and recognized as extremist) to participate in women's school competitions in the state. This was reported on July 9 by USA Today.
The agency's complaint notes that the policy pursued in the region "undermines the rights of girls to equal sporting opportunities," since they are actually forced to compete with men.
In turn, a representative of the governor of the state, Gavin Newsom, announced his intention to adhere to the law, which guarantees transgender people the right to participate in school competitions in accordance with their self-identification. The corresponding regulatory act was adopted in California in 2013.
On April 4, a fencer was disqualified in the United States for refusing to compete with a transgender person. It is reported that after the incident during the competition, the referee approached the athlete and showed her a black card, which meant a serious violation of the rules of the tournament or unsportsmanlike behavior.
