The European Commission (EC) has revoked the accreditation of a translator who was suspected of espionage after she took notes at a meeting between the leaders of the European Union (EU) and President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky. This was reported by the newspaper Le Monde on July 9.

The article says that during the December 2024 meeting of EU leaders with Vladimir Zelensky in Brussels, the translator responsible for translating from the Ukrainian language made notes in a notebook about the negotiations.

"The records were confiscated. After careful consideration of the facts, it was decided not to use the services of this translator anymore," said a source in the European Commission.

It is reported that the dismissed translator previously lived in Ukraine, but her parents are allegedly Russian. It is noted that the results of the internal investigation have been handed over to the Belgian authorities, who will decide whether to continue the investigation and whether the alleged incidents are part of espionage operations.

On May 21, at a joint press conference between Angolan Foreign Minister Tete António and the head of EU Diplomacy, Kaya Callas, in Brussels, there was no Portuguese translator. At the beginning of the meeting with reporters, Antonio asked if he could speak Portuguese, but after a pause it turned out that there was no specialist with knowledge of this language at the event.
