The gynecologist spoke about the risks during the heat for pregnant women
The summer heat can be a real challenge for pregnant women. The body, which is already working in an enhanced mode, is experiencing additional stress, which can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as swelling, uterine hypertension and overheating. On July 10, Idilia Orfanova, a gynecologist at the SM Clinic Center for Reproductive Health, told Izvestia how to keep pregnant women healthy during this difficult period.
"During pregnancy, a woman's body increases the volume of circulating blood, which makes her more susceptible to overheating. Heat exacerbates this condition, leading to vasodilation and, as a result, edema. In addition, high fever can provoke uterine hypertension, which increases the risk of premature birth. Dehydration, also a common occurrence in the heat, can exacerbate all these problems," warned Orfanova.
To protect yourself from the negative effects of the heat, the doctor gave a number of recommendations. In particular, according to her, it is important to observe the drinking regime.
"Drink plenty of water, at least 2-2.5 liters per day. Give preference to clean water, unsweetened tea, and dried fruit compotes. Avoid sugary carbonated drinks. Drink often, in small sips — don't wait until you feel thirsty. Take a bottle of water with you — always carry water with you to be able to quench your thirst at any time," the specialist advised.
In addition, according to her, it is important to dress properly in the heat. It is recommended to wear loose, light—colored clothes made of natural fabrics - linen, cotton will allow the skin to breathe and help avoid overheating. A headdress is also important — a hat or headscarf will protect you from direct sunlight. Orfanova recommended spending more time in cool rooms: if there is no air conditioning at home, visit shopping malls, libraries or other places with air conditioning. She noted that it is better to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the heat peak — it is better to stay in the shade, especially from 11:00 to 16:00. You can also take a cool shower or bath several times a day.
However, the doctor noted that it is important to control the swelling. To do this, in particular, it is necessary to reduce salt intake, as it retains water in the body, increasing swelling.
"Lift your legs while resting — this will improve the outflow of blood and lymph. Keep physical activity in mind — moderate physical activity, such as walking, will help improve blood circulation and reduce swelling. Consult your doctor about taking diuretics — self—medication during pregnancy is unacceptable," the gynecologist continued.
In addition, according to her, it is important to regularly monitor blood pressure in order to notice deviations from the norm in time. You also need to pay attention to fetal movements: decreased fetal activity may be a sign of dehydration or other problems.
On June 30, Vyacheslav Minko, a dental surgeon, told Izvestia that pregnant women should visit a dentist. According to the doctor, if you do not treat caries or other dental diseases during pregnancy, you can cause great harm to both your health and the health of the child.
