- The media pointed to the likely absence of the results of the future summit of the leaders of China and the EU
The summit of the leaders of the People's Republic of China and the European Union (EU) scheduled for the end of July will have rather symbolic significance and will not bring significant and concrete results. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on July 9.
"Despite the significant date it is supposed to celebrate — the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the EU and China - the summit promises to be more symbolic than meaningful. As both sides are entangled in trade disputes, expectations have reached a new low," the publication says.
The diplomatic event is scheduled for July 24 and will take place in Beijing. It is noted that during the meeting, EU leaders will try to "save face" rather than achieve any practical results.
"Although Brussels and Beijing usually take turns hosting summits, Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this year showed disdain for EU leaders by declining an invitation to come to Brussels," the newspaper points out.
It is reported that due to the deterioration of relations, the parties do not plan to publish a joint statement following the meeting, which is a departure from the norms of international diplomacy. According to the sources, a more general press release may be presented to the public instead. The parties have already used a similar format of the statement in 2023.
On July 8, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called on China to reconsider its foreign policy and limit interaction with the Russian Federation. According to her, Beijing's current position actually allegedly contributes to strengthening Russia's "military economy."
