There may be several reasons for the acute reaction of the child's body to anesthesia. Svetlana Sofi, an anesthesiologist and intensive care physician, told about this on Tuesday, July 8, commenting on the situation when a four-year-old boy fell into a coma due to anesthesia in dentistry.
The specialist noted that malignant hyperthermia is an acute life—threatening condition in which the metabolism of calcium is disrupted in genetically predisposed people. This leads to electrolyte disturbances, destruction of muscle tissue, a strong increase in body temperature (39-42 degrees) and other disorders leading to multiple organ failure and death.
"The introduction of an antidote, dentrolene, can help, but not always," she said in an interview with Radio 1.
Sophie admitted that the cause could be an allergic reaction: the parents simply might not know about it, and it is also impossible to predict. In addition, it could be thrown from the stomach into the lungs if the child ate before anesthesia.
According to the anesthesiologist, at the age of four, the child needed to have a blood test (biochemical, detailed) before anesthesia, as well as an X-ray of the lungs.
"There is a list of tests and examinations in the clinical guidelines. If the child is being observed by specialists, then a conclusion is required from them," the specialist said.
