The symptoms of pesticide poisoning and their accumulation in the body can be diverse and depend on the type of pesticide and its dose. However, in severe cases, loss of consciousness, hallucinations, coma, and even death are possible. Irina Volgina, Associate professor of the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, told Izvestia about this on July 8.

Common signs of poisoning, according to the expert, include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, weakness, tremor, dizziness, headache, increased sweating, salivation, coughing, difficulty breathing, impaired coordination, cardiac arrhythmias and hemodynamics, seizures, as well as skin and eye irritation.

"The accumulation of pesticides in the body can lead to chronic diseases such as diseases of the nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, liver and kidneys, heart and lungs, as well as cancer. Exposure to pesticides can have both short—term and long-term health effects," Volgina said.

Short—term (acute) symptoms include skin and eye irritation, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and in severe cases, seizures and even death. Long-term consequences can include disorders in the functioning of all organs and systems, infertility, cancer, lung diseases, as well as neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

To reduce the level of pesticides during washing and cooking, the therapist advised thoroughly rinsing the products with running water, using baking soda for soaking and, if necessary, vinegar or salt. It is also important to properly process food before cooking, for example, to remove the peel from vegetables and fruits that are usually peeled.

"If pesticide poisoning is suspected, it is necessary to call an ambulance or contact the nearest medical facility, provide fresh air to the victim, rinse them with plenty of water if pesticides get on the skin or in the eyes, and induce vomiting if pesticides get into the stomach. If the symptoms of intoxication have already occurred, then it is necessary to drink more water and take sorbents," the specialist warned.

Earlier, on June 27, Svetlana Burnatskaya, a general practitioner and occupational therapist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), spoke about proper nutrition in the heat. According to the expert, it is better to choose light foods such as vegetables, fruits, berries and greens.
