An unknown person contacted senior American officials, as well as foreign ministers of other countries, posing as American Secretary of State Marco Rubio using artificial intelligence (AI). This was reported on July 8 by The Washington Post (WP) newspaper with reference to the US State Department.

"The US authorities do not know who is behind the series of attempts to impersonate another person, but they believe that the perpetrator is most likely trying to manipulate influential government officials in order to gain access to information or accounts," the material says.

It is clarified that the attacker sent both text and voice messages, including through the Signal application, which is actively used by the administration of US President Donald Trump. In total, five people became his victims — "three foreign ministers, the governor and a member of Congress."

According to the publication, the unknown became active in mid—June, when he created an account. Marco.Rubio@state .gov in Signal. Hani Farid, a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, in turn, said that in order to conduct such operations, a specialist does not necessarily have to be experienced in the field of AI, since government officials may be negligent in data security issues.

"That is why Signal or other unsecured channels should not be used for government needs," he stressed.

According to him, impersonating another person becomes easier after receiving the phone numbers of an official linked to the Signal account. Farid stressed that an attacker only needs 15-20 seconds of audio recording of a person, and stressed that in the case of Rubio, this is easy.

On March 25, The Atlantic magazine published a scandalous publication in which Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of the publication, stated that on March 11 he received a request to connect to Signal from a user under the nickname "Mike Waltz." Two days later, Goldberg received a notification about being added to a group chat called "Houthis small group."

Later, on March 15, a user named "Pete Hegseth" posted a message that contained details of the upcoming strikes against the Houthis. According to the screenshots, Hegseth sent information about the departure of American F-18 fighter jets 31 minutes before the start of the mission.
