The State Duma at the plenary session in the first reading adopted a bill that expands the list of grounds for deprivation of acquired citizenship of the Russian Federation. This was announced on July 8 on the official website of the lower house of parliament.

"At the plenary session on July 8, deputies of the State Duma unanimously adopted in the first reading a draft law on amendments to Article 24 of the Federal Law On Citizenship of the Russian Federation in terms of supplementing the grounds on which Russian citizenship is terminated," the publication says.

Currently, the deprivation of acquired citizenship of the Russian Federation is possible only for the commission of crimes provided for in 64 articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which include banditry, organization of a criminal community, drug and arms trafficking, espionage and some others.

It is proposed to expand this list with grounds that should include the commission of violent acts of a sexual nature, public calls for terrorist activities, justification or propaganda of terrorism, assistance to the enemy in activities directed against the security of Russia, propaganda of Nazi symbols and paraphernalia.

In addition, it is also proposed to deprive acquired citizenship for secret cooperation with foreign organizations against the security of Russia, calls to carry out activities against the security of the state, and unlawful influence on the information infrastructure of Russia.

On June 25, Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin said that the adoption of this bill would provide a systematic and holistic mechanism for grounds for termination of citizenship and protection of national security.
