- The human rights activist pointed out many violations during the detention of Russians in Baku.
The detention of Russians in Baku was accompanied by numerous violations of international law. This was announced to Izvestia on July 8 by Ivan Melnikov, Vice-president of the United Coordination Center for the Support of Compatriots Abroad (UCC) and human rights activist.
He also stressed that the Russian citizens were arrested due to far-fetched circumstances. According to him, one of the arrested, IT specialist Sergey Sofronov, was allowed a lawyer, and a complaint against the arrest has already been filed. Alexander Vaisero, a tourist, also had a defender, but it has not yet been possible to arrange a meeting.
"Sofronov also received a package in his cell. The package includes basic necessities, non—perishable food and several books in Russian," Melnikov shared.
Earlier, on July 1, the APA news agency reported that the Sabail District Court of Baku had arrested for four months eight Russian citizens detained on charges of organizing drug trafficking from Iran and cyber fraud. In addition to Safronov and Vaisero, the suspects include Valery Dulov, an ex—employee of Russian oil companies, Dmitry Bezugly, an ex-employee of large IT corporations, Alexey Vasilchenko, a psychologist and traveler, Dmitry Fedorov, a student, and Anton Drachev, an IT specialist.
On July 2, the Russian Embassy in Baku reported that the detained Russians were receiving complaints about the use of physical violence, document checks, and visits by unknown persons.
