The US State Department has revoked the status of a foreign terrorist in relation to the Islamist rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, recognized in Russia as a terrorist organization and banned) in connection with its dissolution. This was announced on July 7 by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

"The removal of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham's terrorist status will take effect on July 8 after the announcement of the dissolution of the HTS and the commitment of the Syrian government to fight terrorism in all its forms," Bloomberg quoted Rubio as saying.

In his statement, Rubio also noted the "positive actions" of the new Syrian government under the leadership of President Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa.

Earlier, on July 1, US President Donald Trump signed a decree on the lifting of sanctions against Syria, which had been in effect since 2004. Later, Rubio allowed further easing of sanctions against Syria.
